What is causing this?

Just thought I woud point out that if you go for a PO4 test and it shows very low to zero levels, it could just be that the algae are removing it just as quickly as it is getting into the water. I would probably stick with the UV or diatom filter with some good follow up water changes and filter cleanings to handle organic load. You may also try a coagulant and siphon it out with several water changes.

Just an update:

Well I covered my tank since I first posted... haven't turned on the light for 2 days now. It's a lot better than before... But it's still pea soup...

How long can fish go without eating?
I haven't fed it since 3 days ago:confused:

Fish can go a week or more without food without harm. Leave the tank covered with something that light can't get through, and don't uncover it for any reason other than to check and make sure all your critters are okay...

I had this problem, and it took nearly 2 weeks to completely clear things up. I did sneak them some food every 4 or 5 days, but only a fraction of what I normally fed them.

As for the ich, treat it before dealing with the algae problem. It'll kill your fish a heck of a lot faster than pea soup will. After you have that taken care of, do a 30-50% water change, being sure to vacuum your gravel thoroughly, and give your fish a week-long solar eclipse. You'll see worlds of difference.

I have had a tank almost like that, I shut down the lights for two weeks, 10% water changes daily, cleaning filteration once per week, and I also used a power head with the filter hookups to the bottom of them. I also invested in some ALGONE.

Buzzz! Incorrect choice!

Despite what the LFS said, adding a bunch of chemicals to your tank is not the cure.

Algae blooms need two things: nutrients in the water column and light. Restrict one or both and the algae will go away.

You'vre received several good suggestions, particularly those suggesting you reduce feeding, increase your maintenance and find out whether you've got high phosphates. Any other approach will be a band-aid...

You're not adding something like ProperPH, are you? Those pH controllers are often LOADED with phosphates....
