Sponge Filter
What the heck is it?

I was looking into possibly breeding guppy's and saw a sponge filter may be good for it? I currently have only used Whisper Filters. Would i need a sponge filter?

A Sponge Filter is basically an air driven non-mechanical filter. Usually it is a sponge in the shape of a cylinder with a tube in the middle, an airstone is put down the tube, the rising bubbles draw water through the sponge thereby creating a flow through the sponge. The sponge acts as a biological (bacteria colonize the sponge) and mechanical filter.

There often used on breeder tanks because with mechanical filters there is the danger the fry will get sucked up by the filter. Also they're very cheap.

Question, Cant a sponge type thing be wrapped around the intake in a whisper filter to block the holes but still allow suction?

That would work just fine then i think. Unless any1 would like to advise me otherwise

Sponge filters....a great filter that works very well. And makes an easy task jumping a new tank.
