My thermometer on my tank that is the strip kind that is like a sticker says i have 86 degree water close to 90. At the same time in the same tank i have one of those in tank thermometers that has a suction cup. Its the one that has that red stuff that rises when it reads the temp. It says that it is 81 degrees.

Which one should i listen to?

the one actuly in the water

Stick-on thermometers are, IMHO, useless....

I ad one of them on first tank-hard to read. Went to the glass in tank version, fish would knock it loose from suction cup, thermometer floating around in tank.

Splurged on a Big Al's order and got the Coralife digitals ($3, I think).

Money well spent!

I use the digital type...:hang:

the thermomter in the water is probably more accurate.

i use digital thermometers from coralife and lifeguard, the ones with a probe that goes into the water and a digital read out stuck at the aquariums frame. those are by far the most accurate.

In my experiences, glass thermometers are more accurate than the stick-on ones. Stick-on thermometers can be off depending the room temperature. I agree that if you want an accurate thermometer, get a digital one ($10 Petsmart).

I'd like to point out that simply putting your hand on the outside of the glass of your tank will tell you as much (maybe more, from what I've heard) as the stick on thermometers. I just touch the outside of the tank to decide if the tank is "too warm" or "too cold". You can tell pretty easily if you feel often to get a "normal" reading. Skin is amazing that way : )

For finer readings, I use either the glass thermometers in the water, or my digital one.

I would splurge the few more dollars and get a digital one. I've wasted money on a couple sticker type ones - neither could you even read. Then I got a couple of glass ones. They both eventually broke. I've since got one cheapie digital on one tank and the Lifeguard 'Big Digital' Temp Alert that features in-tank and room temps (both at the same time- dual display) plus you can set low and high temps and an alarm will sound if the temp crosses either. Just to much doubt in the 'analog' thermometers.

I use the stick on the glass thermometers only to give me a general idea of wha the temp in the tank is. Other than that they are pretty ueless. I definetely recommend either the ones that go in the water or the digital type. They are way more accurate.
