What is the best brand of filter?

I am looking for a good filter, for a 30 gallon aquarium. I have done a little research on filters, but I am still not sure, what brand of filter is the best. I want one that will last a few years. Please let me know. Please be specific. Example: Ex45 Whisper filter. I prefer a power filter. Also, would it be better to have a filter that does close to the amount of gallons you have, or should I get a filter that does double or triple. I will be doing Mbuna cichlids!

you would want a filter that is rated for more than your tank size. i believe most members here do NOT follow the gallon guideline on the box.

since you prefer power filters, many people recommend aquaclear, i used the old Whisper 40 and 60 so i don't know about the newer ones. in the end, its whatever fits the budget and your needs

I believe you want a GPH that is 7-10x your tank size (for power filters)
(ie. 30g tank you want 210-300GPH)

Underthesea - I am a confirmed convert to Sponge Filters. I have one in all my tanks (4) in addition to a power filter. Also, I use Nutrifin Cycle which helps to keep my tanks crystal clear.

I recommend an Aquaclear 110. You can get for around $50.

Palmdoc - Nutrafin cycle will not keep your tank crystal clear water changes will. Just so you know. No need to a bacterial additive to an established tank.

30g is indeed too small for mbunas. I'd stick with julies or Tanganyikan shelldwellers but that's another topic although it's a heads up.

i have always had good luck with marineland emperor 400's i have them on every tank

Like lupin and others said,a 30 is going to be too small for mbunas in the long run. I would get some tangs instead. Both aquaclear and emperor are fine. I would either get one of each, or a small eheim classic canister.
