I'm not sure this is something that goes with freshwater. I got a 72 gallon bow tank (craigslist find) & this came with it. I'm not setting the tank up right now as the new construction is not completed :( Can anyone tell me what it is? and what do you do with it? I'm sorry if I sound ignorant, but I've only had smaller tanks (30 gallon and under) which did not have this type of equipment. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Looks like a skimmer. I've seen them on saltwater tanks. Won't need it for freshwater. Sell it! :)

This is a skimmer. They remove the scum of proteins that forms at the top of SW tanks.

yes, it is a protein skimmer for salt water aquariums.

Being the packrat I am, I would keep it for my "HUGE SALTWATER EXTRAVOGANZA". Except I know nothing about saltwater yet. Thereby necisitating the further devotion of time to an already growing unhealthy obsession. Better sell it.

Yea, I have zero intentions of doing a saltwater set-up. I think they are too much work. I looked it up as best as I could and it looks just like the MTC Model HSA-250.
It came with the tank I bought from a guy who used the tank for freshwater but was going to convert it to saltwater. He bought the skimmer used, could use a good cleaning.
