gets about 6 inches long, is colorful, peaceful, and would be good in a 45g tank? i would prefer a SA cichlid.

thanks, but those are all too small. they have to be 5-7 inches or they will get eaten.

nothing yet, but it will eventually house my Ctenopoma Acutirostre

i'm not going to setup the tank for another month or two so i'm just exploring all my options. my husband wants bright colorful fish, and the only ones i can think of that get big enough are cichlids. even though ctenopoma are from africa, they are from the congo river and prefer softer water, as do SA cichlids, so i'll probably put some pete in the filter to soften the water a bit, since i have pretty hard water.

Not a cichlid, and not sure if they'd get along behavior wise, but three spot (all colour varietys) and pearl gouramis grow to about 6 inches, and will probably suffice for "colourfull fish".

Kribs would do well in there and won't be eaten by your anabantid. Congo tetras would also work well in the tank as would an African butterfly fish up top and even an African Knife Fish.

you have no idea how much i would LOVE congo tetras, but to buy 6 would cost me almost $50. they are $7 at the lfs

i may get them anyway though. if i'm going to spend more than $80 on a filter and another $30 on lighting, what's $50 for the perfect fish?

I agree with you - Congos are just drop dead gorgeous as adults.

Sure, why not drop the extra bucks! Then again, it's so easy to spend other peoples money... :-)
