I picked up some of these little guys up. This little guy pictured is in a temporary holding container while I set up a 2 gallon species tank. Sorry for the very bad picture. At the store, it was very solid orange-red with the exception of a clear middle. Is it just a variation of neocaridina heteropoda 'red cherries'? I can't find anything on the web about them. Although, I don't often buy plants or livestock without researching them first, I suspect they may be red cherries and I just had to have this strain. What do you guys think?

Looks like a rili to me. Rili is a mutation of red cherry, so same species, just different color. Only issue is they are sometimes inbred too much to keep the color. Make sure you get soem from different sources so that your population stays healthy.

Thank you! You've all been very helpful. Will be breeding them with either blue pearls or fire reds.

Heck, why would you want to do that?? These are a specialty new line, it would seem to make more sense to just breed these and work on strengthening the red-and-white coloration (you can call them "Cherry Crystals" if you want to capitalize on the craze). Keep an eye out for more of the same type to enhance your genetic stability.

If you want to mix in a blue do it with the culls from your regular breeding program on the off chance of getting yet another variant. Apparently there is already a "blue rili" out there so I am evidently not the first one to come up with this idea. :)

I do agree with you that they're lovely on their own. There were only 3 left at the store and clerk there didn't know when they will be getting them again. They actually didn't know what they were as I had to ask for help in identifying them here. As always, you guys have proven to be very helpful and knowledgeable. Thanks a bunch!

I do love the contrast of the blue rilis so I'll be trying for these as a fun side project. However, I may get a breeding stock of these red rilis someday. My very poor camera phone picture doesn't do it justice.

Gotta catch 'em all!
