Hi, what size filter should i get for a 29 gal. ? I was thinking about a eheim or rena xp. I have never used a canister filter before, are they easy to use and what kind of filtering media do you use? I am planning on lower to medium light plants and dwarf neon rainbow fish.

Here it all depends on your budget.
But for a 29g you can go for either xp2-3/ fluval 405 / eheim ecco 2234-36 or even the pro's
canisters are pretty easy to use.. as that infomercial "set it and forget it" well thats about how canisters work. Most of the media is canister specific (sponges) but the rest you can buy any biomax/polyfil media you want

nice set up idea very and yes canaster filters are awsome i just got a rena xp2 for my 55 gallon i am running a hob on it as well but the rena canasters comes with all the filter pads needed to start but after a while i would replace them one by one but there such good filters and with the spray bar spraying the water long ways in the tank i had to mod the spray bar cut it off a little to fit in the tank side ways but the it gets awsome circulation in that tank great for planted tanks so id so go with rena and remember you cant ever really over filter
Don't forget Marineland filters, either the H.O.T. 250 Magnum, or the 350 Magnum, or the C Series.
A 29g tank is right in the wheel-house of many filters...
If you're planning on a heavily planted tank or on having lots of other structure (rocks, wood etc.), go large. If it's going to be less crowded with respect to things that block water circulation, you need not go so large.
I'd go w/ an Eheim 2213 for a pretty empty tank, 2215 if you really want to stuff it. A Mag would also work as would an XP3, small C series...
Things to compare among filters w/ any sort of decent reputation: Flow rating, Internal Volume, Price. When you look at all 3 of these factors, you'll probably start pruning the list w/o any doubts.
