Hey i have recently set up my tank again after moving and decided to try "cycle". (that stuff that starts your bacteria colonies for you)

So far we're good no amonia no nitrites in 1 1/2 weeks.

What I'm not sure of is whether these are different bacteria with a shorter life span or something that would necesitate adding it on a permanent basis. the instructions recomend dosing with it every week- is that just to get me to buy it or will this ast like my old traditional biofilter if i just leave it alone now?

I'm beginning to regret trying to cheat, just because the unknown worries me! ha, ha that'll teach me!

anyways thanks for any advise in advance! -K

It's an unnecesary product, and almost certain it does nothing.

Yeah, what he said!

You will be much better off spending the money & purchasing Bio-Spira from a Reputable LFS. Just make sure that it's fresh & kept refrigerated until you use it.

blast! :o I still haven't found a good LFS when i lived her 4 yrs ago i had one but alas it is closed.

so now my question is this: I stocked my tank much faster than i would usually have done and there's no chemical filtration going on so where are my amonia and nitrite spikes? Am i about to have a massive spike!? eek

The problem is that cycle doesn't contain the bacteria that will establish and reproduce in the tank. It does contain nitrifiers, just not the strain the tank needs. So once you quit putting it in, you will see the spikes, but until then, it will look like the tank is establishing the needed bacteria colonies when it in fact is not. I'd stop adding the cycle, and start testing and doing water changes as needed to prevent the spikes from getting too high, and deal with a fish cycle.

okay one more quetion- what is Bio- Spira? is this also Nitrifiers or is it really the bacteria i need?

Bio-Spira is the Real McCoy!

you can buy it online and at some LFS's. just make sure that it's refridgerated when you buy it and keep it refridgerated until it goes into the tank. Also, any extra left over needs to be refridgerated as well.

Oh the joy of Live Bacteria living in your fridge! LOL
