I'm making a 55 gallon stand and a retrofit canopy. What type of wood would be the best to use? I was thinking Oak or something for the stand or at least for the legs and support braces?

if u want somthin that looks ok but is fairly cheap
use some 2x4 for support and buy some thin oak plywood and use that to cover everything u can sand it down and stain it
I built one a long time ago looked really nice.

When I built my stand, I made an internal frame out of 2x4's and covered the outside with 3/8" MDF and primed and painted it to match the living room's decor (at wife's request). It turned out very nice for a first attempt at building a stand.

home depot has s tongue ands grove pine that would be perfect fo closing it in. I used it to close in the 29g reef's stand and it looks great.
