Hey everyone, possibly getting closer to a job, which means I will need a car. Not looking for something fancy (tho it would be nice). Just normal brands like honda, toyota, chevy, and so on. My budget is $2k if my parents match, $3k if they pay 2 and I pay 1 and eventually pay them another 1k.

Are there any examples you can think of? I know most of the members here got their first car quite a while ago, so if you had a teenage boy, what kind of car would you allow him to get? I want something dependable and decent gas mileage. Age doesnt matter if it is a very dependable car. But mid 90s to low 2000's seem to be what they have around here for the price range.

Just curious, many users here have had more than 1 car, and know stories about several. Or even is there a specific brand doesnt matter what model?

I would LOVE a truck but a normal car is much more likely and will have better gas mileage.

Not too worried about looking cool (but once again, it doesnt hurt). My friend just got a 1999 buick le sabre. But it is comfortable. To me, I could have to coolest car in the world, but if it isnt comfortable for sitting in traffic, it probably isnt the best car. Comfort and gas mileage come before horse power and looks.

My dad got a 98 buick from a dealer that had been traded in for $2000. It had only one previous owner, an older guy who took immaculate care of it. It had about 140,000 miles on it, but was still in excellent condition because of how well it had been taken care of.

You can get good deals on good cars, just be smart about it. Look for something that has a good history, something that the previous owner has taken care of, etc. The make and model is less important (though something with good gas mileage is always a plus) as something that's been well taken care of and doesn't have any major issues.

My first car was a '77 Chevy Malibu classic. Mint green, and HUGE. I was pretty sure it made me look awesome, but it also made me BROKE. Junked it after three years. I've had a few cars since then, but the most reliable/economical has been the '96 Honda accord, which still runs like a champ. Stay away from used Subarus. I have had two, both developed problems that didn't make sense to fix. I still have one of them, I use it occasionally for hauling stuff short distances, but I wouldn't let my daughter ride around in. it.

A ford Taurus. My '93 Taurus stood up to anything I put it to. Get something like that. Don't go Pontiac (like a grand am or grand prix) or Mitsubishi or anything that seems like an affordable sports car'ish type.

I agree with this too. An accord, a Chevy cavalier, ford Taurus, all good choices.

2006 Toyota Rav4. I thought it was a great vehicle for me as my first car. got relatively good gas milage, had all the latest safety features, and could hold all my volleyball stuff and whatnot. was also pretty good in the snow.

for a teen, look for something with ABS, ESC, etc. especially look for ESC if you are thinking about getting a small SUV.

family/midsize sedans usually do the trick, like the Hyundai Sonata/Toyota Camry/VW Passat etc. Nowadays though, small sedans like the Hyundai Elantra/Ford Focus/Mazda 3 are similar in interior volume to older family sedans and get much beter fuel economy. if you can buy new, all 2012 vehicles will have ABS and ESC standard.

My first car was a 97 Ford Taurus. It was, and still is a good car, but that model is notorious for having transmission problems. I had mine rebuilt and about a year later the gears slip all of the time going into second. Think of getting your car as you would a new type of fish. Research anything you can before you commit. Find out what its biggest problems are etc. Now I have a 99 mercury cougar and so far its been a good little car. My dad had a Honda accord, they are great little cars. Pretty economical too.

A wise man once said you don't get a job you won't get money with no money you don't get the car no car or money you don't get the girl.
