What will African catfish eat that are live

I am new to the aquarium deal, I bought a 55gal tank from a guy and it came with a 6in Bircir and a catfish. He gave me pellets that he feeds them but I don't ever notice him eat. So my question is what are some other food options for him? I bought some of the brine shrimp that come in a little bottle but neither one of them will eat it. The guy I bought it from said he will eat tiny fish that can fit in his mouth so I have thought about that, like buying some tetras or ghost shirmp. Any suggestions would be great

Unless my eyes are fooling me, that looks like a Synodontis cat. He "should" eat anything. How long have you had him? Is you water good?
 
I have had him and the tank a week. The guy I bought it from was moving so he couldn't keep the fish so I couldn't really let the tank cycle. We kept the little bit of algae on the walls and kept the same sand and the didn't change anything in the AC70 filters to help keep the good bacteria. I'm in Memphis and we have some awesome water here. It tested 20ppm on nitrates, 0ppm nitrite, 6.5 PH, 0ppm on KH, and between 0-30ppm on GH. The GH could kinda go either way. That's what the water tested before I put it in and still the same this morning. I did put some water conditioner before hand for the chlorine.
 
Yeah he is a fatty. I don't really know the sex. I bought 10 ghost shrimp and put them in there there is only 1 left so I assume he ate a couple and the Bircir ate a few
