What would you recomend

My roomie might be buying a 120-150 gal tank and I was just wondering what you guys think would be cool fish for the tank. I think he was thinking about a cuple oscars and a sting ray but what else would you guys sugjest? He is also on this site so I am sure he will post.

A large mouth bass, a couple punkin seed sunfish, and a small channel catfish. Toss in a couple dozen minnows and some crawdads, you'll get just as many good comments from vistors and if you let toss in a night crawler or two then you'll always be remembered.

I wouldn't mix Oscars and a ray. Oscars are notoriously messy fish and rays need VERY clean water conditions. In fact, I don't recommend rays at all for beginning fishkeepers. If he wants an active and aggressive tank, cichlids would be just the trick. They are also colorful. I prefer small, peaceful tropicals because I personally like to look at a tank to relax. The colors and gentle schooling and movement are good for that. If I had a second tank, cichlids would be fun too though, for a change of pace. Anyway, google up freshwater rays and I think you'll find out theya re tough to keep and since they are expensive, that could just mean you spent a whole lot of money to watch one die.

I'd suggest a small colony of medium sized cichlids (convicts, Green Terrors). They will be much more active than Oscars (yes I know they're cichlids too). I always found my old Oscars to be kind of boring and messy. Any medium sized cichlid would be just as good at munching on feeder fish (if that's what you're looking for) and you might see some courting behavior and maybe even spawning (almost certainly with the convicts)

Has anyone tried JCMO's suggestion? As a biology teacher I always thought a big tank with native pond fish, lowlight (ala floating plants), and lots of bogwood would look fantastic. Not sure if those fish would take to an aquarium setup though. Any anticdotes on the subject?

Except that the channel catfish would eat EVERYONE and get WAY too large for even that aquarium.

Ok for a tank for beginners.
I would suggest a tank filled with live plants, mainly swords. Easy plants to grow and keep a huge school of neons. I am sure you can easily keep a 100 in a tank this size with no problems.

yeah but it would be the neons and that would be it. Sure it would nice to look at for awhile, but overall you could do so much more with that space.
Africans, Angels and a colony of apistos, New world cichlids, Discus, An arowana + tea cup stingrays.
