What's the best water conditioner

For the folks who use Prime:

"Prime is a complete conditioner for both marine and freshwater use that removes chlorine, chloramine, and detoxifies ammonia and nitrite. It also provides essential ions and stimulates natural slime coat. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the aquarium."

So basically it looks like they all say things that we know they can't do. As for the slime coat, Prime says it only stimulates, instead of adding something to give a coat, so im confused on that part.

Anywhoo, I've been using API's stress coat since I set up my tank and have had no problems.

I have a bottle of Seachem Prime sitting right in front of me. It clearly says, "Provides Slime Coat" on the very front of it.

Ok, so I take it that Prime or amquel is the most prefered. I kind of always thought that the slime coat was a marketing thing, but just wanted to see what you guys thought. although I don't think that it's a bad thing if it says it does. I've used a couple different brands so far and have had no problems, I just wanted to get a really big bottle this time and wanted to know what everyone prefers, before I'm stuck with something for a long time.

The side says:

". . .also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat."

Those two phrases seem to nullify each other.

Time to email SeaChem again.

The bottle does not say anything about neutralizing heavy metals.

I use Stress Coat but not because I believe in the slime coat claims; just as a simple dechlorinator. I've used it for years with no ill effect.

Just looked at my bottle and no it doesn't say anything about heavy metals. I guess i just read it in a post.

Well I'm glad I don't need to use this stuff with every water change. Not even sure its worth using once a month.

It was only purchased to help detoxify the nitrites, I didn't trust myself with the salt remedy just yet.

Jeesh, what did I start? :) Is there a more natural substance we could add to our tanks just to dechlorify? Maybe just the main ingredient in a dechlorinator? Would probably be cheaper anyways.

It's posted on their web site. I've emailed them about that as well.

Chided them for the slime coat crap as well :o
