What's wrong with these rummynoses?

I originally had 5. One died so I brought it back and got another one. Then, one's body started to turn white by his tail and he couldn't really swim. He died so I brought him back and got store credit. Now, it seems that a few more guys are doing the same thing. What is going on? All of the other fish are fine. My water is good- p.h.- 7, ammonia- 0, nitrites-0, nitrates- 20.

Well I've got a guess. At work sometimes we lose a whole tank of tetras to basically their tails falling off and their bodies rotting. I believe it is a case of finrot, perhaps not from your tank, but the tank they were housed in at the store. Once the problem reaches their bodies we've never been able to save them. I say treat for fin rot and hope. Their tails grow back if the rotting is stopped BEFORE it reaches their bodies. Not sure on exactly what we use to treat it.

This same thing happened to me with new rummynoses. I lost 3 out of 6. They looked like their tails had been bleached and the white crept forward on their bodies. The guy at he lfs said that it was stressed related and that once it started, there was no cure that he knew of. I think that these rummynoses are a little sensitive. Good luck for the rest of them!

Devils fan, I think rummynose are one of the hardest fish to move, they are very easy to stess out. I always quaranteen them and treat them with sulfathiozole and copper for a few days. It also helps with cardinals. These fish are all wild caught and go through quite a lot of stuff on the way to your local store. Some stores do not even carry them because they are so delicate.

I have a 2 neons that have exactly what you are talking about. One died but the other seems to be fighting off whatever the illness is tho. He got whiteish around the base of the tail and it began to spread along his body. I thought he was gone for sure but I didnt have the heart to euthanize so I quarentined him. The white started receding and now he's back in the main tank. Theres only a little patch left.

I concur with Lotsoffish - I have kept Rummynose for several years now - and once you get them settled in your tank, they are fine. But they are all wild caught - and as my LFS says - they ship horribly.

I have seen my LFS scoop out 20 to 30 dead fish at a time from a tank filled with a one to three day old fresh shipment.

their advice to me - and so far, it has worked fine - is let them get a shipment in, and wait at least 2 weeks. Then buy the Rummynose after those 2 weeks - and spend double time what you normally do acclimating the fish to your tank.

IE - lights off, float the bag, add water to the bag several times more than normal, etc. then net the fish and release them in your tank. Following that regimen, all my Rummynose have always adapted to my tank quite well and quite quickly
