Hopefully never Especially if you’re talking about a Magnum 250-350, I believe they have among the highest priced impellers.
I believe one of the only to ways to tell are either by visual damage apparent when doing a maintenance check or through loud/odd sounding noises that would occur during filter operation with a defective impeller.
In general I wouldn’t worry about it. I don’t think its really a common problem but if you can find a impeller for a good price it never hurts to have a spare.
