I have recently purchased a pair of Kribs and was wondering when they might breed. The pair follow each other around quite a lot and the female has a prominent red belly. They have looked quite closely at the plant pots in my tank but have not made a claim to one just yet. The tank is a heavily planted community tank with Tiger Barbs, Cardinal Tetras, a Pleco and 2 Rams. They are probably about 2" in length.

Are they likely to be too young...Is there a normal pattern leading up to mating or any tell tale signs.

Thanks
Kieran

They sound like they are getting ready, but will take them a while. My kribs failed at thier first few attempts... although the fry were picked off by other fish in the tank. The fry never survived until i moved them to thier own tank.

Once the male starts vibrating at the female and vice versa then you should be seeing some mating soon. The pair will also hang around the nest and guard it vigourously.

Thats great. It sounds like they are on the early dating stage then at the moment.

Thanks

Didn't mean to sound so vague. I was wondering the same thing myself just weeks earlier. After reading various information pairing I decided to just give it some time. As luvmykribs stated, once they start doing the body vibrate dance;) its only a matter of time. The 2 will most likely stay very close to their cave with the female being inside moreso. My male moved lots of substrate around the entrances and left only a small horizontal window to use heh.

Look what I've found this week:

Hey, whoever answers this question, could you tell me when my panduros will breed? When you're finished with that one, get started on: "When will my bolivian rams breed?".

Seriously though, feed lots of live foods and be patient. I saw an immediate increase in pre-spawning behavior when I started feeding live bbs to my panduros. It's allowed me to practice my shrimp wrangling skills for when the babies come. :D

After all that, wow!!!, I have just spotted about 60 white/ cream coloured eggs, In some bogwood in a heavily planted area of the tank surrounded by cabomba. The female is not moving far away and most of the other fish avoid this part of the tank anyway. A couple of questions please,

How long until the eggs become fry?

what can I feed them?

how can I feed them considering this is a large community tank?

Also I have two extra powerheads in the upper levels of this tank should I turn these off?

Many many thanks for your replies.

Congrats! I'm surprised that your kribs are attacking the other fish. Very territorial during this time. As far as how long I honestly dont know, but mine took like 2-3 weeks I think. Considering its a community tank, I'm not quite sure how you'd feed just them. I know they stay with the parents and nibble on anything on the substrate. As far as the powerheads, if you keep them in, you might want to put like a small patch of pantyhose material around the intake.

How long until the eggs become fry? From what i remember its about 4 or 5 days before they become 'wigglers' and another week or so before they are free-swimming. Often with my spawns they were inside a coconut shell so i didnt get to observe the development stages. But from the few times that weren't thats what i remember.

what can I feed them? I fed mine Baby Brine Shrimp via a turkey baster or eyedropper. The female may attack the tube until she learns that food comes from it, then she'll allow it near the fry. Feed several times daily if you can. Powdered flake food works as well. Infouriza might be too small, but if you have plant life in the tank then you should have some in there already that the babies will find.

how can I feed them considering this is a large community tank? *see above :D*

Also I have two extra powerheads in the upper levels of this tank should I turn these off?I would turn them off or down, and cover the intake like said before. Panyhose tends to clog the flow very easily, extra filter sponges work great. The mom and dad wont take the fry too near the surface, but they do go up peices of wood and plants with the babies. Feeding excursions! Very cute.

congrats!
