My gold mystery snail and my black mystery snail mated about 3-5 days ago (I cant really remember). The gold one was on the top when mating, so I assume that the black one is the female and will be laying the eggs. I have two black mystery snails, and I can't tell which one was the one that mated. Anyway, I only just lowered the water level yesterday. The snails go up to the top to breathe, as usual. One of the snails halfway crawled out of the water (i was very hopeful and excited at this point) but then crawled back in the water and went around as usual. When will my mystery snail lay her eggs? Do I have to do anything special other than lowering the waterline? I have lowered it about 4 inches so far. Thanks!

it will happen, keep the water level down and you you should see some soon. do not let her climb out. cover that hole or you may loose her.

before laying my girls have a tendency to come out of the water and check out a few different locations before finding one she likes to lay at. And they usually start laying at night after lights out.

You know I doubt there is an actual black. I mistook one snail for black but after reading Donya's views in applesnail.net and observing closely the snail, there is no such thing as black albeit solid black for diffusas. Dark striped green and dark striped purple tend to look almost black. I have a snail with both colors mixed up which could explain my confusion. Yours is most likely dark striped green.

petsmart sell them as black there are dark brown with black stripes, i have one as well when you look close at it its a rich brown perhaps the stripes are not black but look very very dark,..

If you ask me, that sounded look like dark green striped to me. Any pics? Black would have to be solid black. The shade tends to be anything else other than black if you try different light spectrums to determine the shade.

here is link to my thread showing a petsmart black mystery snail its actuall a brown one very dark but the flash on the camera shows the true color, as to the stripes i'd say very dark purple/redish brown? but at the store he looked almost black, compared to the others

Yeah my GF is kinda upset that Darth our black mystery snail is well brown

I have had handreds of baby snails and my adult snails always lay eggs at night. I have 6 snails in a 150 and they lay eggs like crazy! I don't really time the mating with the egg laying. I just don't have the time. They seem to be on each other constantly and the eggs are endless. What size is your tank? Be sure to block ALL holes! I don't make any special water line changes and typically only leave about an inch at the top. I like to keep the eggs as close to the water as possible so they don't dry out. Hope you have some babies soon!
