Is there someplace that would carry these that is local? I live in south Ga and there aren't any decent pet shops within a reasonable driving distance. Is there another source of fluorite or laterite outside of mailorder?

Also, does anyone just use topsoil under a layer of sand? I've been doing that for a while with mixed results.

At my local Petsmarts, they have both, Flourite and Laterite. They are not cheap, though. They charge $24.95 for Flourite and slightly below $20 for a pack of laterite.

Just print out the page with the cheapest price you find for Flourite and PetsMart will match it. It's amazing you end up getting the cheapest price and you don't even pay shipping!

It's how I got my Onyx Sand. The manager was amazed that I was about to save over fifteen dollars a bag - but that's their policy and I walked out with the savings. Oh and when I bought a Rena XP2 I saved something ridiculous like thirty bucks or so.

I do it all the darn time. In fact about twenty minutes ago I saved six bucks off their store price for a Whisper 10 by bringing in a Big Al's printout.

I do that, too :). I bought all my filters, heaters and the python this way. Sometimes, it's more than half the price off.

I didn't have luck with laterite of flourite, though. Laterite is not in their catalogue, and flourite costs the same online as in the shop. But I didn't know that they actually match online prices from Big Al's. That would indeed save a lot.
