Figured I would throw this up here after the useful replies I received in my cheap gravel thread.

It might just be me, but old/used fish tanks seem to be fairly overpriced these days. People on Craigslist want a lot of $$$ for them in my area. Any tips on where to go for cheaper tanks? I'm looking to score a few 15-30 gallon tanks. Probably prefer 20 longs (which should be a pretty common size).

I've also been looking for tags sales but not scoring much.

Thanks in advance,

I'd say your best bet would be a become good friends with your lfs. They usually know somebody who is tearing down their setup/tank, and may be able to hook you up. Petco dollar a gallon sale is good too. Craig'slist is good, just have to keep at it.

Yard sales, and yes, I'll admit it... Garbage day.

I have scored more than a few tanks that were just out on the curb on garbage pick up day.
I didnt necessarily drive around picking through people's trash, just happened to see them sitting there.
Once I saw a guy carrying one out to the curb, I stopped and asked if I could have it, and he said "sure, theres another one in the garage if you want it too!"

Tell people you know that you are looking for them, and you'd be surprised how many people have old tanks in their garage, or basement.
I have scored a few that way too.

But if all else fails, hold out for the Petco $1/Gal sale.

I have 37 tanks, and I have only paid for 6 of them. only 2 of the 6 were bought new.

Any local (or at least within reasonable driving distance) aquarium clubs around you? I drive over 100 miles/2 hours+ for the CCA meetings once monthly. Occasionally find great deals on tanks being auctioned off at the meetings, and fish almost always go for much less than retail or online prices.
