Does anyone know which of the major brands can be used interchangeably with glass & acrylic? I don't want to have to go the custom-made route..
thanks!

I don't know brands, but its the construction that matters.

acrylic tanks need sturdy table top like surfaces to place them on but glass tanks only need support around the perimeter where the plastic bottom rim contacts the stand.

the entire bottom of the acrylic tanks are load bearing so that needs a surface under the entire tank.

yes, this is the exact problem I'm running into..

it's hard to tell which ones have an open or closed design for the top. I don't want or need a really high-end cabinet, so I've been looking at All-Glass, Perfecto & Oceanic at Pets-Warehouse.com-- unfortunately their product descriptions are really lacking, and the manufacturer's websites aren't much better. I guess I'm going to have to either email the manufacturers or go shop at the local Petco.

I have a Perfecto stand, it's made of veneered particle board and has one solid piece on top. My old stand was a Big Al's 'moneysaver'. Not as good quality as the Perfecto, but also one solid piece on top.

As long as the bottom is tempered glass, it only even needs to be supported on the sides....I have my 55g on cinder blocks. But acrylic does need to be supported all the way through, because it will Bow out and break.

Update:

I did find a pre-manufactured aquarium stand to suit my needs, it's an Oceanic "bookshelf" stand. I had it shipped from pets-warehouse.com, arrived with some dented edges, but other than that it fits the bill perfectly.
