Hello everyone,

I'm a really new aquarium owner. It has been less than a week since I got the aquarium. I'm now planning to get a background for my tank because the wires running on the back shows and spoils the look of the tank.

Can you give me suggestions to pick a good background which goes well with the plants and fishes? I would prefer it to be a solid color background. I was thinking more like a Black or Blue background.

What do you people think?

Thanks in advance

black all the way!look at pics of Roans tanks..she has a black background and it looks soo awesome...

All four of my tanks have black backgrounds. Most equipment is made of black, dark grey or smoked plastic, which will disappear against a black background. My tanks also have black silicone seals, stands and light fixtures; keeping everything black makes it easier to concentrate on the tank itself and doesn't distract my eye, and also makes bright colours really pop. I like blue, but lighter shades tend to make equipment stand out and remind me of LFS tanks.
That said, if you're new to the hobby, why not play a little? When I started out years ago I had a tank with red gravel, a red stand and a background with plants and wood. I believe after that I graduated to red foil (okay that one was a mistake), then blue, and I think once I even tried white (don't). One great thing about backgrounds is that most storebought patterns are reversable and they're easy to change so try a few things and see what you like - after all, the colour/picture is there for you the fish don't really care :)

black freshwater
blue saltwater

Doesn't the black make the tank like a mirror and harder to see into?

I want to keep my tanks live on the web with a webcam, so anything to enhance the look is good, but not if it makes it reflect the room in front of the tank.

Actually, if I get a bigger tank, I think I'll be making my own pseudo rock background with caves etc for the fish to hide in.

Thanks a lot for all the replies. Based on all your suggestions, I'm going for a black background.

thanks again.
