I need to write a persuasive essay on which is better a SW tank or FW tank. Unfortunately I personally don't know. In this Essay I will need to use footnote(which is why I'm asking you. If you could please explain which you think is better and why.
Thank You,

well you could argue both sides but let my argue the freshwater side. Freshwater is less expensive to maintain. You can get freshwater fish that can rival saltwater fish in color/beauty. Fish for freshwater are less expensive, wheres the more expensive saltwater fish are more fragile when it comes to water quality/conditions. That's all I can think of right now hope it helps. I'm sure there is are some great points on why saltwater is better, but I wouldn't know, I've never kept one.

I'm sure you might have opened a can of worms here, for you can not really tell whick one is better. It's like asking if a dog or a cat make a better pet. Dog lovers will go for the former, cats lover for the lattest. Some will love both and other will hate both too.

However, there are some guidelines you can call to make YOUR OWN desicion:

1- Color display: if you look at freshwater and salwater aquaria pictures, you'll notice how normally a saltwater reff tank shows more color than a freshwater similar tank. Saltwater fish commonly sold for the hobby are generally more colorful than their freshwater counterparts. Also, odd creatures are more likely to be found in saltwater tanks (starfishes, for example).

2- Fish capacity: in the other hand, if you like to see lots of fish in a tank, freshwater allows you to put more fish in a certain surface/volume of water than marine tanks.

3- Cost: a marine tank is more expensive to set up then a freshwater counterpart. Fish are more expensive, and some material used in FW aquaria will produce problems in saltwater tanks bacause of the corrosive salt. Also, the most eyecatching reff tank setups require expensive ligth systems that consume lots of electricity.

4- Difficulty: setting up and maintaining a marine tank normally involves more water chemistry and work than a freshy tank. Also, water parameters are more forgiving in freshwater tanks than in a salty aquarium.

5- Plants: saltwater tanks have virtually no selection of plants that can be raised in the tank. Freshwater tanks can become true underwatwer gardens if properly maintained. Also, tle paladium is a freshwater setup where plants grow outside the tank and populate the rear wall. Wonderful.

These are some thought that just jumped into my mind, and are general approachs to the truth.

My freshwater set up can become more expensive then my friend's marine depending on what I decide to put in there. Also, I can work my fresh water so hard to make it perfect for my tank that the dificulty will match that of recreating sea water.

So, there is no definite answer to your question. Look at some pictures in the internet, ans you'll see a lot of differences among different types of tanks.

there really is no right answer. everybody prefers something different. some like freshwater, some like saltwater, some like both. i personally am happy with my freshwater for the moment. i don't think i have the patience or ambition to go for saltwater. i like plants, and i think there are a lot of wonderful, interesting freshwater fish. plus my entier 20g long tank has cost me less than $100 to set up, including fish and plants and decor.

Actually that is why I picked this topic. I wanted to pick something that is not a big issue. I wanted something really irrelavent to most people. My last one was on Paintball Vs. Air-soft(don't worry paintball won.)

I have to agree with the others in that it's kinda like apples and oranges. both have their pros and cons and probably come out even in most comparisons.

in my opinion though I think freshwater is better because it's more forgiving. if your parameters are off just a touch in a saltwater tank everything winds up dead (or so I've heard ;) ). the work involved in a freshwater tank jsut seems a little easier, there isn't as much equipment to buy (has anyone ever needed a protien skimmer for a FW tank?), and if you do things right a FW tank can be every bit a beautiful to look at as a SW tank. that's my opinion anyway :)

Everyone says that the salt water dominates the world of the "uninformed" as far as color goes and people think they are prettier, but IMO a planted freshwater tank with either some angels or even better a few pair of discus will rival the best of reef tanks anyday. And especially being in college, freshwater deffienetly helps because its so much cheaper.

a downer about SW is a lot more of the fish selected for SW tanks come from the wild where a lot for FW are tank or farm raised. A lot of FW fish are a lot easier to raise from fry than for SW.

if you want both sides, you will need to post this in the general marine section too... while posting on multiple sections is normally bad, i think this might be ok (OG smite me if im wrong)

Freshwater is cheeper... by a lot, and is generally eaiser, saltwater has a better selection of pretty fish, corals are cool, and has an awesome selection of invertebrates. freshwater has plants instead of corals, which are cheep but usually dont come in vibrant colors like pink or blue, just green (sometimes red) for the most part but they grow faster, are eaiser to care for, and are expendible (for the mostpart)

in this essay id write with several paragraphs, each one pitting a different aspect of fresh or saltwater against the other. before you write it decide on one side and stick to it, so if you go for marine, dont mention the prices (unless the assignment is to compare/contrast, then just analise and explain). If you go for fresh, dont mention dull fish... mention Discus... one paragraph to contrast salty fish and fresh fish, one to contrast fresh plants and salty corals... ect...

GL, plz post it when your done and post the grade when that happens!

anyone want to compare to the marine answers?

I just read the answer to this question in the saltwater forum and their opinion is almost the same that has been expressed here.
