Which is better Saltwater or Freshwater?

I've kept both and though I haven't had a salt tank in years, I'm seriously thinking about starting one up again. As far as one being better than the other is concerned...better in what way? That's a really open ended question and I can't really answer it. I like them both pretty much equally.

I need to write a persuasive essay on which is better a SW tank or FW tank. Unfortunately I personally don't know. In this Essay I will need to use footnote(which is why I'm asking you. If you could please explain which you think is better and why.
Thank You,

Get a brackish water tank, problem solved. :idea2:

a downer about SW is a lot more of the fish selected for SW tanks come from the wild where a lot for FW are tank or farm raised. A lot of FW fish are a lot easier to raise from fry than for SW.

Almsot all SW fish are wild caught, but the people that catch those fish make a whole lot more money catching live fish, than they would get if they fished them for food. Gives a lot of those countries incentive to protect their reefs instead of letting the fishermen fish them out. It could be argued either way whether its a good thing or not.

I personally prefer fresh water. Salt water tanks have no personality imo, they all pretty much look the same to me.

I have to agree with this. When you talk to me a bout a saltwater tank what comes to my mind is a 125 gallon reff tank with some clown fish and yellow and blue tanks swimming around the anemones.

I know I'm generalizing, but normally freshwater tanks give more thing to choose from to complete the decor.

What kind of tanks are you gonna be comparing? Planted vs reef? fish only vs fish only? There is not just one FW tank, just like there is not just one SW tank.

Are you trying to show how one is more expensive than the other? The argument could be made that both fish could be kept in a tank with an UGF. The only difference in price would be the salt(which isn't really expensive). If it's a comparison of a high end planted tank VS a reef tank. The price would probably be identical. If it's the cost of the fish for each tank that depends on the fish you choose. You can buy about 6 clown fish for the price of one discus.

Is your paper gonna be about maintenance? Again both sides have advantages and disadvantages. A discus tank you should change water on an almost daily basis. A fish only SW tank you would have to top it off with freshwater daily. The planted and reef tanks need a lot more time and attention given to them. Both would need checking of trace elements. The reef tank would have a few more tests, but nothing to give one the edge over the other.

I think it all comes down to personal preference, You can find pros and cons for either. I'm not sure if you picked a very easy topic for your paper.
