I know the aesthetics of a tank are based on personal preference, but since I am terrible at making decisions I am going to put aesthetics aside since I can't decide on which one I like better.

My decision is between a community tank or an African Malawi Cichlid tank.

In my community I would go with: 11 Zebra Danio, 7 Tiger Barb, 2 Blue Gourami, 2 Sunset or Paradise Gourami, 5 Cory... lots of plants

In my Malawi: 4 Yellow lab, 4 white lab, 4 orange mbuna, 4 electic blue mbuna.

Here is what I need to base my decision off of:

I want the most personable tank, the tank with in which the fish are more likely to show personality and recognize myself, while at the same time have something to really watch from across the room, have interaction within it to watch.

I have a 55 gallon with a 40 watt fluorescent strip light. No rocks. So either I have to spend money on rocks (not that much because I will find cheap ones) and fish (cichlids cost more), or lighting + plants + fish. The thing is I really don't have that much more money to spend.

So based on cost, aesthetics, personality, entertainment... which tank is better for me? Which one will provide the most interaction passively and actively?

do you currently have any planted tank? I'm finding them to be a lot of work.

on the other hand, I'm not a huge fan of ciclid tanks.

what about a community-ish tank?... with a large school of something, and 1 or 2 large fish that the school may see as a predator, but with a small mouth, so they don't become lunch. should make for a lot of activity as the school avoids the big boys.

I have nothing but a java fern... what is an example of this type of community-ish tank? If I have few fish I really would want a lot of personality, like an oscar, except I don't just want 1 fish.

Sounds more like a large tank with few Oscars. They are like puppy dogs.

I have 2 Male Flame Dwarf Gourmis, 1 Gold Gourami, and 1 Neon Blue Gourami. They have tons of personality. They are a blast to watch and they are all males. And they get along great together eventhough they are all males.
