I have this white gunk filming over certain parts of my heater. Specifically some of the rubber or plastic parts. Also on the cords. You can rub it and it flakes off and floats around. Only on the submerged portions - not at the water line. Any one know what this is and what I can do about it (if anything)

i had some gunk on my heaters rubber suction caps and also on the filter spray bar
it was a white'ish green colour, could be algae i guess
solution = got 2 apple snails, they munched away at it, havnt seen any since :D

I've got the same thing. Far as I know, totally normal, won't hurt anything. Incidentally, it seems snails eat it - I noticed a snail munching away on it yesterday, and the suction cups are clean now :)

i had this and my fish ate it i wondered if it could have been excess food

i had it when i was feeding the tank fishfood without fish though
to cycle it prior to getting some bio spira
it was gone in less than 24 hours and i caught the fish having a munch quite regularly

Interesting - I hadn't considered it might me alive since it seems to adhere to only some parts. I thought it was due to some reaction between the particular material and something in the water. Problem I have is that this is occuring in my wet/dry sump where my heaters are located. I wonder if I could introduce snails to the sump?
