i have this white stringy algae looking stuff growing on the rhizome and the roots of my java fern. i noticed it the other day but paid no mind, now its almost doubled in size. i cant get a clear enough pic, but it looks kinda like cotton.

anyone help me out? should i remove the java and rinse the rhizome off?

I can tell you that Eritomayacin(sp) can get rid of most problems like this but I consider it a drastic move. I would try some decent warer changes first and see if the stuff will go away if there are not enough nutrients in the water to support the growth of this stuff.

k.

but would taking the pplant out and rinsing it in a bucket of clean water help?

Rinsing in cool water might help but honestly if this stuff is growing that fast in your tank, it might just come back.

I have the exact same thing! I posted it before I read the board for today oops!

My java ferns are growing really well though, so I don't know what's up. It's moved on to my moneywort now, which is also growing well. I don't want them to start dying on my again though :(.

From the picture, that could be a fungus like I had on some mopani wood, but I'd bet more that it's a form of algae, maybe staghorn or brush. Is it growing mostly along the edges of the leaves?

I've been double-dosing excel to treat algae until I get a CO2 unit, and the algae on my java fern (similar to what I think is infesting yours) is receding.

If you take it out and rinse it under tap water and slightly brush/rub the spots where the "unknown thing" is and it comes off then its fungus.. If it does not come off then I would go with what Irishspy had stated that it can be staghorn algae which is popular to be seen on java ferns. And in serious cases it will look really really furry/cotton like.

Do you have any co2 running in the tank? How often do you do w/c, feed fish? Do you dose the tank with any ferts/traces??

Edit: ehh lol scratch this whole thing.. you posted before me...
Then it might be fungus growing. Take out the plant and rinse it off, rubbing off the areas where this fungus can be found. Then weekly check up on the fern to make sure that the rhizome is not roting.
