white stuff growing on drift wood

i have some white, almost botton like substance growing on a piece of drift wood. i doused it with bleach and water for several days and then put it in fresh water with water treatement for 4 more days and repeated the last step one more time to be safe. i was just wondering if this was harmful in any way to my fish or the tank. if it is then i will remove the drift wood or something. help!

i dont know, it kinf of looks like the stuff that was growing on an onion plant bulb i hadin my tank for a while, i would take ther wood out and boil it and then see if it grows again.

I would be a little nervous about bleaching, or for that matter cleaning anything with chemicals of any kind and putting them back in the tank. I think your best option for any biolog. substance would be to boil it.

It looks like the fungus I had appear on a piece of mopani wood. It's unsightly, but it does die out in a few weeks, and then you can remove the wood and scrape it off. I wonder if there's a bottom-feeder catfish or shrimp that eats this stuff? :idea:

My corys and shrimp don't touch it, but the snails do.

I have about 50 pounds of Mopani that I'm getting ready currently. I'm testing out different methods of preparation to see if I can get that stuff gone before it hits the tank. So far, boiling water and baking doesn't do it. I'm trying boiling salt water right now, maybe that will take care of it.
