Hi everyone,

I've noticed just in the last couple days that a film of white stuff has formed over the suction cup holder on my heater, and the tube that feeds my bubble bar. I haven't found anything on white algae, though, which was my first guess.. any idea what is building up on there? Otherwise I have almost no algae in my tank (just a few green flecks at the back). The tank is about three months old.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

I'm not sure... I don't have a hardness testing kit, though I could pick one up. Do you suppose its a calcium-type build up?

Thanks! :)

it's probably fungus. it's gross, and has happened to me every time I've added a suction cup, hose, or new heater... unless I wash it a bazillion times before putting it in the tank. it also forms on new driftwood commonly.

it really isn't that big of a problem, and will eventually go away on it's own... but I find my fish and shrimp avoid areas of the tank that have it... it will also spread around easily if you rub it off under the water... I usually take out the affected suction cup or hose carefully, while using a 1/4" airline as a siphon near it to suck up the released fungus... then I wash it like nobody's business, sometimes with a little bleach... rinse it well until it smells like a spring day, and then put it back.

Thanks, Mellowvision. I'm going to take out the parts and wash them, and see if that helps. Luckily the affected parts are relatively hidden from view behind plants (so my fish don't spend much time there, regardless) -- but it would be nice to be rid of it.

I have exactley the same thing. My chinese Algae Eater come every now and then and tried to suck the white thingie from the heater, and while the white things swims in the water, my Blue Gourami come and tries to eat it !

At first, I thought it's a kind of white algae, because of the attitude of my CLE towards it, but after reading this thread, I really get confused.

Please confirm if you still have this white cating and if not, how did u get rid of it ?

Thanx
