Whitish Cloudy Water after Filter Change?

Hi, all --

While cleaning my tank and doing a 30% water change last week, my Aquaclear 30 filter died on me . I ordered another via 2-day mail. In the meantime, I bought another brand, just to have something running in there. (The only store I could get to does not carry Aquaclear.) Therefore, the media in this new filter was brand new. I used this for about 48 hours.

When the new Aquaclear arrived, I used my old media from my broken Aquaclear and got it started.

In the time all this was taking place, my water was becoming cloudy (white). It occured right after the filter swap and water change, so I'm unsure which action caused the cloudiness.

I've checked the levels:
Ammonia: 0
NO3: 10-15
pH: 8.0 (normal for my tank)

Also, the fish are acting normal. (Tank specs are in my signature.)

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
G

The white cloudiness is most likley bacteria blooms which is normal in a cycling tank should not be too worried you may have disturbed some of the bacteria in the filter by removing some and the blooms are the cause of that.

It is unlikely that merely changing the water caused the white coloration. While tap water does come out cloudy and white sometimes, it usually clears within a few minutes. It is possible that you are experiencing a small bacterial bloom due to the immediate filter change. I think it sould clear relatively soon. I am definitely not an expert, but I had a similar situation and it cleared up just fine.

Thanks so much. That makes me feel better.

It will probably clear when you do your next water change which should be a week from now. dont be suprised if you suck up some big brown clumps from the gravel ive seen this a couple of times with bacteria blooms.

I just did another water change and it is clearing up well. No big brown clumps, though! :D

i would also say a bacterial bloom so keep an eye on your water though and keep testing as its better safe than sorry.
