Who makes the best computers?

In your opinion who makes the best personal computer and laptops?

As a person that sells computers, the word "best" is loaded.

Then there is the whole PC vs Apple thing.

From what I can tell, people that own an Apple, love them. I do not know anyone that owns one. They do have cool comercials.

As far as the PC's go:

The best way to do it is to build your own, buying high quality parts.

Alienware is now made by Dell.

Dell is not as good as they used to be. Sony is not either. They are still vey good, but not as good as they used to be. These two are still the "best".

Both companies have had to make major cuts in costs and the quality in there computers.

Toshiba makes a good computer, I like the quasimo line.

HP/Compaq are decent. Compaq most likely is the best dollar for dollar. HP has improved over the last few years.

Acers can be good if you pay for the higher models, stay away from the lower priced Acers. I would stay clear of the Acers.

IBM has came out under a new name, I can't think of it right off hand, my guess is that they are decent, but have nothing to really judge it on.

I would stay away from Gateway, but some folks swear by them.

I hope this kind of helps.

i've built my own, and a few for friends, and i've never had a complaint.

I repair people's brand name computers, and they come back for more work when it breaks again..

i build one for them, and i don't see them until they need to upgrade.

"best" is such a vague word......it can mean a lot of things, especially when dealing with computers. You can have "best value", "best performance", "best quality", etc.

If you're truly looking for the best computers money can buy, look no further than voodoopc. However, if you do, expect to pay a pretty penny ($5000+)

If you're looking for a great bang-for-the-buck pc, you cant go wrong with dell or hp.

I personally prefer building my own pc, as I know everything that goes in it and it saves me a lot of money.

Prebuilt, I like Toshiba, as well.
I'm looking at laptops for my girl and I'm going with a Toshiba there.

Since the topic has been brought up. A couple of people here seem to build their own system. What exactly does one need to build a pretty reliable PC. And how does one learn to "build" PC's. What kind of study are we talking about here?

Hardware compatibility issues are the most important thing to consider when building your own. You don't need a college degree to build, but a good understanding of computer hardware is a must. It helps to have a natural curiosity and interest in what makes a computer work. Most people that build their own started off just wanting to get the most performance out of their system and to keep up with the current technology. Many work in the industry and/or are 'gamers'. Research and read.
