The thread title says it. Why are hang on overflows so expensive? Someone there is making some huge profit. Looking at them there is nothing there and then to top it all off they require you to purchase a bulkhead fitting besides. That fitting can be molded right into the overflow housing. OK can anyone give me an guess at how many I could sell if I designed my own , molded the bulkhead fitting into the the overflow box, made one size fits all. Say if I sold them over the internet offered delivery anywhere in North America for 30.00 Canadian a piece. How many do you think I could sell? I know 30 dollars would give me more profit than I need. Expensive things seem to be for a few other aquarium items I see also.

They have you over a barrel. They know the alternative, having your tank drilled. So the cost of the overflow is just enough cheaper to make it worth while to go that route.

Personally I hate overflows. I'd never use one.

But that's my opinion man.

I think how many you can sell completely depends on how well you can market them. But I would imagine if they were good the sky is the limit.

But why stop at overflows? Make and sell a whole overflow/sump and or wet dry systems. It's all acrylic plexiglass.

Similar subject, I do not see how the CPR Bak-Pak costs as much as it does. Granted it is excellent, so no complaints as far as performance...but All it is, is a few pieces of acrylic glues together and a few pipes stuck through, with a powerhead pushing water...and the powerhead is a different brand.

I'd be a customer if you started making stuff realistically priced and equally as effective!

I agree, me too. Let me know if you go into business. :D

Kurt....off the topic question. What kind of dog is that in your picture. Hes adorable. My guess....schnouzer poodle.

If you could start molding overflow boxes, just make one a little taller, add in a partition in the middle, fit an in pipe and an out pipe...mold or find a way to make a collection cup, then attach a PH and you have a protein skimmer to sell also!

Lassa Apso and Bishon.

Didn't really understand that, hehe. But if anyone has any ideas they can email to kamichel@sasktel.net. Anything can be molded if there is an idea that works. I suppose if someone comes up with something I can use I could pay something.
