Why are my giant danios being nippy?

I have noticed some nipped fins on my Rotkeil.

He is only in a tank with Giant danios ATM. 12 of them.

I have kept GD's in the past and didn't have this issue and it was a much smaller school. I read danios can be nippy sometimes but usually only when in small schools.

But with 12 of them? In a 180 gallon tank?


This obviously cannot continue. The danios are an afterthought in the tank... I have always wanted something to school surrounded by bigger fish. I don't want my Rotkeil touched by 2 dollar afterthoughts.

Is this odd? A phase?
 
what is their behavior like? are they staying close together or spread out all over? 12 fish is not many for a 180, might just be "too much space" for such a small school

It just depends when I look in there. Lights off they all clump together. IF I get up they are all clumped together. IF I wait 10 mins they seem to spread out over the tank.

The plan is to have about 15-20 in the end, but I really don';t want to spend the 20 bucks if they are jsust going to keep being a pain in the *** and I have to take them back.
 
yea i hear that, have you considered any of the other large danio species? I have shanensis now. I am considering trying them in my 220g with my big boys once I make the leap. I would move no less than 40 over though. Honestly, the more the better when it comes to such active fish. If your filtration can handle it, add alot more.
 
I have 1 left of 6. He's a real meanie!Chases and nips at everything and I believe he killed the others, yes he is that mean!

My filtration can handle it, I just don't know if I want that many.

Thanks for the responses though. My knowledge of the smaller tropical fish isn't what it used to be.
 
I have not had aggression with my mini school of GD's. I currently got 5 in my 55gal. I had more but they all get picked off eventually. It seems they slowly but surely disapear at night. Noticing right now there spread out with the lights off. Lights on and they school. Then again my Loisellei's do like chasing them and the male is the one who ate the others.

One thing I will say though is one of the GD's I own the biggest of the bunch is a real punk. He has gone after the other GD's after the Silver Dollars and even tried taking on the siphon hose which left him with scales missing but is fine now. You may only have a one or two aggressors. Just watch them from a distance and see how they act in there.
