Why do I need a water conditioner that stimulates the slime coat on fish? Don't they have the ability to produce their own slime coat? How do these products work? Do they irritate the fish's skin? It seems it would just add stress.

You don't a healthy fish will generate enough slimecoat on its own.Yes many work by irratating the fishse skin

This type of water conditioner is good for the fish because some of the fish's slime coat may have come off with netting or handling during water changes. They simply help to promote regeneration of the slime coat as quickly as possible, before parasites or illnesses can take advantage of your fish. The chemicals do irritate the skin, but not enough to stress the fish. Only enough to stimulate the slime coat.

think of products which "stimulate your fishes slime coat" as crap in a bottle. fish have been producing their own slime coat for many thousands of years and need no help from marketing hype.

Do you have a source on this or just something you read on the back of the bottle?

I think I agree with lv2padl.....I can see the logic in using such a product after netting or trauma, but fail to see why my established population would need any such additional slime coat production....am I sensing snake oil here?

Although I agree with it not being needed, youd be hard pressed to find a popular water conditioner that doesnt claim it has sime cloat stimulating properties. Even the ever-popular Prime says this.
