Why do you blanch vegetables?

Really? I'm going to go out and buy a driftwood, they're about $5-7 for a decent one around here. What kind should i get?

yes..I'm glad someone noticed that..clown plecos have rasping teeth..they also have the long digestive tract needed to assimilate the nutrients form driftwood..they do however, need other sources of food as they require driftwood but do not feed exclusively on driftwood. but driftwood is essential for the clown plecos survival..(they do eat algae)

any kind is fine, as long it's aquarium approved.

You might try feeding unblanched veggies (also, have you tried a variety? Leafy greens, zucchini, broccoli are all potential choices). Blanching, in addition to making veggies softer, also makes them sink. I feed blanched zucchini to my applesnails, as they cannot eat it otherwise (applesnails feed much easier from decomposing food). However, any pleco who's diet includes wood is perfectly capable of (and may even prefer) raw zucchini. I have a royal pleco (a panaque known for wood-eating habits) and he won't touch blanched, but loves it raw.

The trouble with raw zucchini is that it floats. I use a metal fork (watch out for rusting) to hold it down where the pleco can eat. There are other ways to weigh down veggies, but overall I find a fork the most convenient.

I just use one of those overly priced veggie clip things to hold down the veggies. I'd normally put a blanched zucchini into my main tank during the day, by the next morning, there's a large hole in the middle of it but I have never seen any fish even pay attention to it. If I placed my mystery snails on it, they just slide off of it without paying attention to it either. I'm starting to wonder if the blanched vegetable "dissolves" in warm water. I hear people say on here how the moment they put the veggies into the water, the fish would swarm around it and eat, but I've never seen this happen.

if you boil some peas and de-shell them any fish will go for that. i do that but have to put a few in because my guppies will guard them. hehe also make em poo green!
