Last time she was alone in a 30 gal with a pelco. Recently moved her into a 55. Tank mates 6" rt shark, a pair of kribs, 2 yo-yos, a stripped rubber pelco, a common pelco. Moved her into this tank about 2 weeks ago, shark chases her quite a bit when the lights are on but it almost seems like they play when the lights are out. I saw her rearranging gravel this afternoon just noticed now that she has a mouth full of eggs. she swam right up to the sharks cave just a bit ago like she is trying to get him to chase her, something she does quite often.
Does anyone have any idea why she keeps having eggs when there are no males? I would really like to get one but I bought her at walmart, don't usually buy fish there but my lfs has never had these so I gave in a bought one. Since then all the others they had have slowly starved to death. I think they have one left but it's belly is so sunken it's sad. Don't know if it's a male or female. I thought the one I bought was a male when I bought it. but then it lost most of it's color and eventually laid eggs.
My lfs is really good about trading fish in but for some reason they don't like to order anything other than their regular stock. Nearest fish store other than that is 60 miles away and I don't get there very often, but might have to make a trip soon. Do you think if I can get one should I just add one male or should I get another female and a male. Obviously the one I have has no problem laying eggs. It would be super cool to have them actually turn into fish. my lfs would probably take them off my hands for store credit Anyway sorry for the long winded post and does anyone have any insight or experience with female haps having eggs with no males around? Thanks inadvance niner

some thoughts

I don't know about the no male thing. She might like the shark. That's a strange theory but anyway. I don't have a whole lot of experience with the EBlues but here is what I do know. I bought two small EBs from PetSmart about a year ago. They were both about 2 inches and looked identical. They remained uninterested in each other until about 3 months ago. One started getting much larger and finally got the brilliant blue colors I was expecting. Just last night, I finally confirmed that the small, dark gray female had a mouth full of healthy fry. I am very excited about this and have been very pleased with the behavior of the two fish and especially with the gorgeous colors of the male that just cannot be shown in a photo.
If I were you. I would get another fish or two. Try to find young healthy ones and give them plenty of hiding spaces to keep away from the bullies. You might have to wait a while like I did but it should be very rewarding.

Thanks for your response. I am going to try to get a couple more. I phoned the store 60 miles away, they said they would have to make room before they could order some. It would probably take a month to a month and a half. My walmart has a couple left but they have really bad sunken bellies. I tried to get a deal on them but it was a no go,so I will just have to wait and see if they get anymore or wait for a month and a half and take a drive. I really like them and can't wait to start having fry. niner

Ive bred my s. fryeri several times. My female has had over 50 fry at a time and they are very fun to watch grow. Its best to keep more than one female for a male. If there is no male, the female will hold the eggs for several days and then spit them. mine usually held eggs for about 17-20 days before she spit them out. From there I put them in a breeder net and fed them baby brine shrimp. Heres a pic of my fryeri holding eggs(my camera sucks though)...

Thanks for the info, and your pics look good. It's good to know that it's normal for her to do this. I will definately be getting at least one more female and a male as soon as I can. I can't wait to start having fry. Thanks for your reply. Your fish look awesome. niner
