Why does my red parrot periodically get black on its finn, tail , body, and even eye?

This happens once in a while on only one of my 4 red parrot cichlids (yes, the "man-made" ones). The black doesn't stay. Sometimes it's just a spot and others times its the whole end of the tail or dorsal fin.

no !! its water quality~! mine did it once, I was so worried I looked it up and really searched this. its got to do with water quality. more water changes are needed.
mine never did it again when I did my tank 2 times a week or did a major (50% or more water change.
There sensitive .
mine was always breeding with my fire mouth, he never turned black , only one time and never again when I made sure the water was perfect.

its water quality. i had mine over 7 years so im not regurgitating something i read

Thanks, I will check, although I just did a 25 % water change less than a week ago.
25% I would say do a 50% 25% is not much for a parrot fish. and do a weekly water change.
How bigs the tank? what else is in there with the parrot fish? just my experience but a parrot fish needs lots of room and a far better water chan ge then 25%.

55gal with 12 neons, 5 small catfish, 6 black skirt tetras, 6 zebra danios, 1 other red parrot and a 12-13 inch pleco. All the water parameters test fine. Everyone looks and acts as they have always done. I have had the pleco for about 5 years, the smaller fish (either the originals or their offspring) for 3 years. The red parrots are the newest being here about 6 months. I have had no major problems or illnesses.

That's a huge pleco. I say stick to better water changes. 50% every week. that's to be sure your tank is clean. that pleco puts out a lot of waste
As stated, your parrot is turning black because of water quality. and 25% is really not enough of a water change. your tank may be awsome now but your fish did show you it was not by turning black. thats a sign its not all good. :)
