Why don't people just clean their tanks?

Buying fish at a LFS is always an interesting experience. I have been quizzed on my setup when buying a single otto. I bought 30 Tetras yesterday and the person did not even ask me a single question.

Local stores tend to be better than the chains, but it is really the person you are dealing with that matters.

Even with chains I have found very good people and very bad people. Some stores do well by the fish, some do not.

That's a pretty good post... LOL @ the dad who's kid got a 'free' goldfish...

Well, I just moved and have taken a job at my local Petsmart. I have to admit that I am really enjoying it. I am a cashier.
I think that we cashiers are the people that deal with the public the most - and that is a double edged sword in and of itself. We are the first and last people they see. We are also responsible for answering the phones. That means that we are answering questions almost every minute that we are there. Since I have or have had many pets in my life, I try to answer the questions asked as best I can, or direct them to someone who I think would know the answer.
Since I keep fish myself, I usually try to get the aquaria people to tell me about their tanks. I direct people here to AC many times each day. I have to say that sometimes I disagree with the advice that some of the other employees give to customers, but I know that the advice that they are giving is based on their own experience and has worked for them. I have not yet come across an employee that was not passionate about animals, and doing the best that they can for them. That being said, I identify and exclaim over each animal that comes through my register - dog, cat, fish, bird chinchilla, hamster, skink, hermit crab, cricket, worm - whatever.
On the other hand, I have always tried to be kind to people that are in service-oriented jobs. Most of the people that I interact with each day do, as well. Since today is a holiday eve, there were a lot of harried, frustrated people there and many were unkind. Just remember, we are all doing the best we can. We sometimes don't know the answer, but we are learning more each day. Sometimes there are hundreds of you and only a few of us.

I tell people that I work there for the puppy kisses.
Or the kid who wanted to name his new betta "Bob."
Or getting teary as a girl, who had just come in holding a very old, kind of smelly cat, told me that her 17 year old cat had been missing for a week and they had just found her. They wanted to buy her a bed, new food/water dishes and a litter box because she wanted to keep her safe inside the house from now on. They stopped in at Petsmart on the way home to do just that.

We're a female store actually and so far, all the hamsters I've handled have been super sweet. I just love them! I was in a Petco the other day though and just fell in love with the cutest long hair teddy bear hamster! I'd never seen one like that before! SO CUTE! So, that'll be what I want when I can get one.

That's such a sweet story about the little girl and her 17 year old kitty! I have the hardest time not taking home all the dogs and cats and kittens the shelters bring in on the weekends! Last weekend there were two Beautiful Gorgeous Shar-Peis. I had one when I was young and single and living alone and he was the best dog. Till my idiot boyfriend left the gate open and he got out of the yard. :( I was talking with some coworkers about the dogs that day, and the manager of the store was standing there. I said how I'd LOVE to take one of those dogs home and she said "we'll let you!" and I was like, SURE, I can just see my DH's face when he picks me up and I walk out to the car with a giant dog on a leash. I can see him locking the doors and speeding away.

He gave me a strict warning when I started this job that we are NOT going to make our house into a small Petsmart. You see how well that's going. Hehehe Just one week to go and my discount doubles! WOOHOO!!! :headbang2:

did those six deaths have anything to do with the interesting and unique stocking of your tanks?

nope,,, I think the filter i changed on the tank was a used one that I had under one of my tanks. I also changed from ammonia chips to ceramic cylinders on the media baskets for the HOB. The tank has been up and running for about 18 months...min... the UGF is well established and water parameters are great with the Ammonia and Nitrites...plants take care of any nitrates that are there....

So, either the filter pad I used had been used completely and the charcoal blead harmfull chemicals into the water, or the ceramic cylinders did... Other than that....that is the only 2 things I remember doing....

After that....fish started swimming towards top of tank...then one by one.... now I am up to 9 fish GONE... not happy....

On the diversity of the types of fish in my tanks, I actually take pride in being able to create an environment in which more than one type of fish can thrive, they are more interesting to watch..how they co-exist...several different factors... my fish are docil for the most part and do very well...

UNTIL I GO AND TRY TO IMPROVE WHAT IS ALREADY WORKING!!!

well for those of you that stay strong for new fishkeepers and try to keep the fish in safe/healthy homes, thank you!
I get aggrivated in petsmart when i overhear other customers asking things like "how many goldfish can i keep in this 5 gallon tank" but my petsmart has been very positive and we're there often enough that they know to ask my opinion if i'm there shopping LOL!

there's a couple of people that i've sent here to AC, but i dont know that they've ever come to look.. still, the best i can do is make the information available, and if they don't take my advice then at least it's no fault of mine.

I've never been asked a single question when I bought fish or tanks, except once, when I bought a 10 gallon tank without anything else. The most I have seen is some unhappy face when I bought several fish of one kind, but that's about it. I guess that the employees in the stores where I go are either uninterested or have been told not to say anything except when asked.

I think it really does just depend on the particular managers of the store. I know that some stores sell mice and rats as snake food, but our manager has told us not to. We're supposed to ask questions about everything. Of course, that may also depend on the employee helping you and whether they're bothering with doing everything they're supposed to or not. We have a high school boy who is really knowledgeable, but I know he doesn't ask everyone questions about their tanks and fish because he isn't comfortable doing it. I think he's had a few people get annoyed with him when he did so he quit asking.

Anyway, I'm just going to do the best I can with the customers who will listen. I can't refuse a sale, I just tell them I can't give them the 2 week guarantee if they insist on taking a fish I've advised them against. I had one guy come in and insist that he had room and he knew what he was doing and I had to sell him 17 goldfish to take home and put into a 55 gallon tank that he was restarting with all new filters and had been running for 2 weeks with one goldfish from his pond in it. I hope his fish make it, and it's good he's got a pond to move them to, so maybe it was okay. But 17 was an awful lot to put in at one time. I sold him amquel+ so hopefully that helped.

I just love being there and being around the animals and fish. It gets me a break from my little boys and I'm doing things I love. Except for cleaning the bird cages. They're a bit of a PITA. :grinyes:

When I got back into fish keeping about 2 years ago, petsmart was a pretty sad place, fish-wise. I heard people asking questions that were fairly basic, and answered really badly. In the past 6 months, I've seen a big change in Petsmart, though. They seem to be either hiring knowelgeable people, or training them, or both. When I go in to buy something, I am asked about my tanks and it's fun to watch their reactions when I tell them. The most fun I had was buying some koi. They had just received a shipment and had some really nice looking koi. My pond had been up for a while was cycled thanks to two goldfish. The as the Petsmart employee was netting the fish, up on a ladder, she asked me what size tank they were going in. I said "a two thousand, eight hundred gallon pond". She nearly dropped the fish on the floor :)

The big issue I have with Petsmart, and I can't blame them, given the nature of their business, is that the employees are transitionary - they aren't around for long. I am at the 4 local petsmarts A LOT and meet just about all of the employees at some time or other, and it seems like 6 to 8 months is a good long career there. I know that it is likely because the pay isn't great. Still, I'm happy to see that the quality of employee is on the rise. Keep it up Petsmart.

Oh, one more complaint about petsmart - the pacu and clown knife fish. They're so small and cute in the store tank.

The other day I saw this woman ask if she could have fish because she had the water in for three days and the girl who was filling in said it should be fine. She ran off to buy food all excited. :wall:
