why is the 40b tank so popular, over 55g?

I'm just curious as why it seems people prefer 40b tanks over 55.

It seems that people prefer 20 longs over 30 gallons due to the length, so why isn't the same preference of 55 gallon over 40b?

I don't have a 40b or a 55 (have a 55 that was given to me but needs repair, so haven't had it up and running), but am wondering what the benefit of the 40b is. It's deeper but that doesn't necessarily allow more enjoyment of watching the fish.
 
I have a 55 and I like it but being narrow its somewhat of a pain to arrange the decor in. My next tank will be a 75 for the added depth.

I think that is the main reason is for the depth. I have a 110g tall and I sometimes wish my tank had more depth but I LOVE how tall mine is so I like it better that way.
 
A 40b is really about the same as 2 20L put together. A 55 is long and narrow. When I was at petco looking at the tanks that will be in the $1 per gallon sale I realized just how narrow a 55 is. If I was a fish I would much rather be in a 40b than a 55.
 
40b is just better for all fishes. It's wider for larger fish to move around. It's good for planted tank because it's not tall. It's shorter not long like 55. Lots of uses for them.

55 gal = approx 4 sq ft of surface area

40 Beeder = 4.5 sq ft of surface area

40 breeder gives a 18" by 36" foot print vice 12" by 48"...more turn around space and depth for aqua scaping...shallower depth for getting to the bottom, both for maintenance and lighting....
 
55 Gallon 48 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 21
40 Breeder 36 3/16 x 18 1/4 x 16 15/16

I have a 55 gallon myself but I am really considering getting a 40b because the dimensions are just so much nicer honestly.
 
i have a 30 breeder(just a shorter 40) and i love the depth for aquascaping plus cichlids have more room to turn around

If you have multiple setups, then the 40b will meet your 36" width type racks. If you went 55 with 48" width and ever decided to change out the tank you have an option of two 20 High with a width of 24" each. Volume of water matters too. I belive the 40b actually is close to 45 gals.
 
I have all my pleco breeding colonies in 40Bs, and they are very easy to scape and clean. I really like the 45 wide tank that is 36 x 24 x 12, but they are very expensive and very hard to find. If any1 has one for sale, name your price. Good luck.
