I recently purchaced a 20 gal tank and started cycling it. I has sand and some rocks in it. There is one giant peice of driftwood, but after a couple days it started to grow like almost a slimmy white jelly substance all around it. I've never seen it before. Ive looked on the internet for a while and have not found anything like it. Anyone know anything about it. There are 3 zebra danios in it right now for cycling purposes.

Thanks

What's that fuzz on my driftwood?

Quite often after driftwood is added to an aquarium, a white almost transparent fuzz will grow on it. This fuzz can appear several weeks to several months after the driftwood is added to the aquarium. Popular thinking is this fuzz is either a fungus or a mold. Either way it's harmless, unfortunately it's not pleasing to look at. Some people have had luck just brushing it off. Others have had luck by introducing algae eating fish, as they will actually eat it. Neither technique will guarantee preventing this fuzz from recurring. The important thing is to have faith, as it will eventually disappear.

I recently had the same problem it went away after eight weeks.

it seems like once the tank is cycled it goes away. i've had the same problem adding wood to uncycled or midcycle tanks, but not when i add it to a cycled tank.

I had that on some wood not long after I added to my tank, and people here assured me it was normal to have that with new driftwood and it would go away. I think I may have even pulled itout and scrubbed with an old toothbrush.
