Sorry for the crude drawing, but all I have right now is MSPaint.

The "design" is pretty simple. PVC will be attached to the slate with epoxy, The PVC will have holes drilled and will slide a sponge over the PVC to the bottom. Air stone will be inside the tube.

I have a 5g I'd like to convert to a planted shrimp/fry tank. Just curious if you guys think this will work.

Yes. I don't use airstones with mine, but that's a basic design that works. To simplify it even more you can just stick a pvc tube down into the sponge to the base, pull it up slightly, about 1/2 inch. To attach the air line, just drill an angled hole into the pvc tube near the top portion so that the air line will fit in snugly, and then push it into place.

Yes. The slate base is a standard, there are a few other methods though. You could use rigid airline tubing instead of flexible and attach a suction cup to this to hold it in place. Some sponge filters come with magnets that hold them to the side of the tank.

I have some old sponges that lost their slate base and they still stay on the bottom, When I clean them, they get some air trapped in them and float until I squeeze the air out.

I took the lazy way lol. I grabbed some 3/4" PVC pipe and caps today. Got home and sawed it down to a 8" tube and capped it. I think my old airstone is allowing a lot of air to flow through. I'll grab a new one tomorrow. I'll also grab a sponge or some type of media to wrap around it.

What kind of sponge will work? I have a sponge pre-filter on my powerhead in my 29g tank, but it restricts to flow way too much.
