Wise to remove an UGF?

cheaper alternative??

I ditto the conversion to rfug.

I run both rfug and ufg with power heads no problem as a matter of fact my 55 with the ugf powerhead set up is the easiest to maintain. and has the fewest issues.

UFG/RFUG are the best bio filter on the market.

you can find conversion kits at Dr. Fosters to add prefilters and down tubes to feed the ufg

i Dont... :lipssealedsmilie: :wall:

also, i've heard that if the UGF plates dont cover the entire bottom, they shouldn't be used?

My ugf covers all but maybe an inch all the way around the bottom. It is also a single plate. I've used both air pump and power head and have gotten the very same results from both. With absolutley no problems with my fw tank. Right now I'm running my 55 with ugf, air with 4 tubes and an aquaclear (70?)hob filter and it's crystal clear and all my levels are perfect. The tanks is pretty heavily stocked to. What is your reason for wanting to remove or change your filters?

i have a 40g with a Whisper 60 HOB and its a double plate UGF with an air pump. i think i'm really heavily stocked so i want a relatively low cost fix to improve filtration

Have you tested your water? I don't recall seeing it posted. Your setup is not any different then mine. I know my tank is overstocked. I have 3 severums(5 inches) i blue opaline gourami(5inches),4 larger angles,3 clown loaches(5inches)2 albino dojos,1 pleco,1 green cory,1 bala shark and 1 ir shark. And I do weekly water changes of about 25%. The onlt thing that bounces is my nitrates and I know that's from my 3 year old son. He loves to feed the fish. Other then that all is perfect. I wouldn't take out the ug filter, change it if you want. But if your test are all ok then why try to fix something that isn't broken? I personaly like the airpump and the bubbles in the water. I get more then enuff water movement and no dead spots in my tank. Good luck with whatever you descide.
