i toyed with the idea of doing the bucket thing, but i think i'm gonna try the RUGF idea.

Yeah removing UGF is a pain ( did it twice ) remove as much water as you can ( don't siphon the gravel keep the water clean ) then remove the plates with the fish out of the tank like theredchaser said.
One question I have about switching to a RUGF system is If you don't have some kind of pre filter on the power heads wont waste still build up over time uner the gravel bed ?
Before you make a switch to reverse flow ugf how long has your ugf been in place if its been awhile and you reverse the flow your tanks going to become a complete mess. Removing it if its been in a long time is also a pain as fore mentioned and will also turn the tank into a complete mess. I recently removed one from my wifes 55g that had been in for 3/4 years, I regretted touching it soon after I started lol.
