Wish me luck :)

Just curious, what exactly do you do at these meetings?? At least you know the people coming over. If I told my husband I was going to start a fish club and invite over some strangers (don't worry hon, just some folks from AC) I think he would have a fit  !!! He already asks if I plan on running off with any weird fish people...I'm not sure he is as fond of my new obsession as I am :D
Come to the Casbah!

What exactly do you do at a fish forum?

We'll talk fish, I'll probably give a talk about growing plants. We'll talk about ways to grow as a group. I'm not really planning a whole lot beyond that. I just figure I'll see what the group is interested in besides plants and go from there.

Went well for a first meeting, though only 1 out of 4 invited showed up. One of my neighbors is quite interested but her young children kept her from comeing today. I spread out the books I have and we looked through the one he hadn't seen befor. I showed off my tanks.

Both of us are plant tank enthusiests so I led a discussion about what I am doing to get the plants to grow, and algae not to.

We agreed on meeting next month, and I am going to try to find more interested in the club.

total time we met was about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I still have to write down some sort of record of the meeting, but I think it went well considering the effort I put into it. Live and learn :)

Congratulations, Snake Ice! I am glad it went okay. There will always be no shows and the like, but as the group grows, you can usually count on a few regulars and then a few sporadics and a few investigators leaving you witha decent group size. Also, check into what resources are avilable in your area. Anything from a chemist at the water company to tlak about the water composition and checmicals used, to someone from the local fish and wildlife dept to the owner at your favorite LFS can make great speakers. 15-30 minutes for a presentation, and then, as you grow, swap/auctions etc. can bring in more folks. Also, don't hesitate, once you've grown some, to see if you can organize into some sort of official, civilly recognized non-profit group. If you can get to that point, you can start to contact manufacturers and they just may (I have read about it before) donate items to auction to cover costs of the group and provide as door prizes. It's free advertising directly to their target audience and builds brand loyalty. Anyway, best of luck and stay with it!

Yes congrats! Don't expect huge results the first couple of times. This is a building in progress, competence & confidence will come naturally and as the group grows, it will take on a life of its own, sort of a snowball effect.

I wish you lived in the Toronto area.
