So I have this awesome piece of wood I would like to put in my tank. How would I get it ready for the tank. I do not have anything big enought to boil it in. Could I soak it in bleach to get rid of any icky things, then soak it in declorinnated water for a while after to get rid of the bleach.

I am not sure what kind of wood it is was laying around the back yard.

Is it sunny where you are at all? I would just let it sit out dry for a week or so, let anything on it die. If you soak it in bleach, I would let it soak twice as long in dechlorinated water. Wood soaks up the water. I would be afraid it would soak up bleach and leach it out into your tank. I would just let it dry out. Everything should die just the same.....

Maybe I could pour boiling water on it in a plastic tub. Then soak it for a while. Too rainy here to let it dry out.

I would let it soak for a couple of days. Scrub it down with a scrub brush. Then rinse off well. Soak in plain water for a couple of days. Rinse and scrub again. Soak agin in some dechlor water for maybe a day. Then I was done. Sometimes I have poured hot water over it as well. I have done this numerous times and never had an issue with the wood in my tanks.

If you can still smell the bleach, soak it again...but I have never had that problem. Whatever litle bit MIGHT be there....echlor in your water change would take care of it.

I would rather not soak it in bleach so I am going to pour boiling water over it and let it sit for awhile and then change the water and add more boiling water. Then let it soak in regular water for a few days.
