what is the worst information given to you or someone else at a pet store?

"Yah u can put 2 pink convicts in a 3 gallon aquarium." (really stupid of me for listening to him) (when i first started fish keeping)

1 inch of fish per gallon of water. "Me looking at a 12 inch oscar, then looking the other way at a 12 inch nano cube.'

Try doing a forum search, there have been several recent (within the last month or so) threads about this - there are LOADS of stories! I've overheard or been told so much garbage I can't even begin to list it all. When I find a knowledgeable, polite LFS employee I'm thrilled - they're far too rare.
I think the most common lousy advice probably relates to appropriate tank size; far too often people walk out of a store having been told that their 10g tank is large enough for their new bala shark, oscar, pleco, pair of angelfish etc.

i cood put 2 angel fish and neons in a 6.5 gallon tank

Last week I overheard a lfs employee talking to a customer after testing her water for her 10 gallon tank (no idea what fish she had):

"Well your water looks good, but there is some ammonia in it, so your tank is starting to cycle. First comes the ammonia, once it spikes, you'll start seeing nitrAtes, once they spike then you'll see NitrItes"

Ok so I can understand getting them backward sometimes, we all can do that, but he finished with:

"No, don't do a water change. If you want to change out some water, just do a few cups or you'll set the cycle back. The cloudiness is because of the fresh water you put in."

Well at least he knew what a cycle is, so there must be some hope for him (there was for me :p )

6 goldfish? Sure, 10 gallons should be enough.

Later...

Ammonia is high? A little of this ammo-lock should take care of it. (Oh, and absolutely no mention of the cycle!) Cloudy water? This should take care of it. No mention of possible overfeeding. They grew like weeds!

Later... $

Again... $

... $ ... $ ... $ ... $ ... $ ... $ ... $ ... $ ...

75 gallons and a few years later, I find Aquaria Central, the truth, and I find out I'm still overstocked. Now I'm doing it right, not wasting my time looking for help at the fish stores, and saving A LOT of money... 6 years later.

Heard this one on Saturday..."Bettas spend their life flopping from one rice patty to the next,so they can live in those little cups indefinitly" ... do bettas crawl on their fins to accomplish this I wonder?

Rice Patties???? Surely not!
