Would pacu eat firemouth cichlid?!

they should be fine. My friend has one living with about 25 cories and it hasn't touched a single one of them. He's only about 8" right now, but Pacus are not nearly as carnivorous as they look, often preferring more vegie matter as they get older. As long as you feed it plenty, it'll completely ignore the other fish. And from everything I've read, a 240G tank should be just fine for a single pacu.

they grow up to a maximum of 24" yes. 12-24. If 240 is the best you can do, it's better than the lives most of them are destined to live, and better than the other options available. Considering they sell them at walmart and say they grow up to 8" at petsmart I think a 240G is going to be an awesome life for him.

If you keep smaller fish with him, jsut make sure you provide hiding places for them and keep him fed well.

:iagree:

I'm not aware of any healhy pacu that stops growing at 12"...

Fishbase lists its max size at about 42" (108 cm) and while I don't expect one to grow that large in an aquarium I would also not think of one stopping at 2 feet.

I had one many years ago that topped out at 36"..... People talk about goldfish being messy, but OMG that pacu was a dirty dirty fish. And I have big goldfish so I can make a honest comparison, lol. Barebottom tank was the only way I could manage it.

Still, I have to agree that a 240 is a heck of a lot better life than most pacu can look forward to.

Pretty much everyone here is right. I do agree that it is a better life than most of them are destined to have, but is there a chance you could do a larger tank? It would proabably be better for the fish.
