XBox 360 a POS

Because thats the initial costs - when sales start rolling production costs fall drastically. Sony probably makes a PS2 for $20 nowadays.
Besides - they make their money with other things - not the platform.
Basically like when you sign up for a cellphone contract and get the phone for free or $1 - they cost more than that too but the companies get their money through the monthly services/ bills.

Yeah, they make their money other ways. But I was paraphrasing the article I read, which was by their investors. They said that Sony would take a huge loss selling it for only 399. Only? *Laughs*

Thanks for answering the question anyway.

I have a great Nintendo. It isn't backwards compatible but Super Mario Bros Is awsome.

As for XBox 360, I do know that my friends have had no problems playing their old games.

Mmm ok i guess i misread things a little. :) Easy to do when your not a native english speaker.

But i see what you mean. We have a PS2 (given to us as a Xmas gift) and i don't see myself spending $400 on a console. Haven't i read (seen?) that the prices for games are supposed to be higher too ?

In the past the low price of a console compared to a PC was a big point for getting one. Nowadays i can build a decent (not high end) gameing PC for $600.
They put all this "****" into consoles - stuff that raises the price but i don't need.
I haven't once played a DVD in my PS2 - thats what i have a DVD player for.

I want a console for games - not to burn DVDs or send e-mail. Leave that nonsense out. But i guess that's just me ;)

...but you can only play 2nd generation games with a $600 box. The newer games now on store shelves have system requirements that will bring a $600 system to its knees. I know people who spend $400+ a year just upgrading video boards.

Actually, we've played the 'kids' DVDs in our PS2. The other DVD player is in the Entertainment Room (or 'Daddy's Room', as the kids call it). :)

I still remember when I used my PC to play games. Everytime I got a hot game in my hands, I also needed a new video card, more RAM, and even I got a new motherboard and processor just to play a game (Final Fantasy 8).

Now I get game consoles instead. Programmers have to make their games "fit" the hardware, so you know you can play the game with what you already got.

I don't know - i disagree with that to a certain extend (not the fact that some people spend that much money on video cards of course).
If you always need to play the newest game with 1900x1600 resolution and 100fps then yes - that would be the case - but not if you play them on a "normal" resolution, accept to not being able to have all the eye candy cranked up to the max (AA, AF) and can't "brag" of playing Doom3 with 250fps.

Now someone could say "but if you spend that money you need to be able to enjoy the BEST quality".
So i'd say what about the fact that even such a mid range system is able to outperform a console graphic wise anytime - and (unless you have an HDTV) your getting a terrible resolution on your TV anyways.

In the end - its not worth argueing. Some people will always prefer to have PC for games (me ;)) and others swear by consoles.

I should add that if a new console had a $150 pricetag i'd buy one - but the mentioned $400 i will rather invest in my PC.

Didn't want to start a new thread so... because the price point was brought up earlier.

"Georges Fornay, president of Sony computer Entertainment Europe, provided the first credible information on a possible price of Sony's next-generation game console. According to media reports, Fornay predicted a price range of 500 to 600 Euro, which could mean a price of at least $500 and as much as $750 for US consumers"
