my buddy gave me a part of his Xenia soft coral by cutting it from the subsrate with a razor blade. My question is, how do i reattatch it to another subsrate and how long does that take?

One way that I have seen it done is by placing the frag on the substrate of choice (probably a rock) and then wrapping the whole thing in a soft mesh. Eventually the piece will attach itself to the rock.

There was a website I saw years ago about how to do it, step by step. Do a google search for Xenia fragging. Hopefully it will show up. Something will show up though. Xenia are propagated often.

Good deal... keep at it, and soon enough you'll be trading it in at the LFS for credit, trading it to other hobbyists for other corals, or straight out selling (if you can avoid having to resort to just giving it away).

A coral farmer came to a local meeting last month, and surprisingly said that one of the most sought after, easy to grow corals is Xenia. He said he can't grow it fast enough to fill all the orders he receives. I think that's in part due to how poor of a shipping reputation Xenia has. Nonetheless, the LFSs around here can't keep it in stock, and they tend to price it at $50 for a piece about the size you pictured.

Good luck!

Well, I just set it on the spot I chose, and placed a peace of rock on it's stem, and lelf it there for a few days. Low and behold, "IT WORKED!!!" I want to grow my tank as natural as possable. I see many beautiful tanks with there coral stuck to a dozon or more peaces of substrate then wedged on a rock somewhere. Well that good and fine, and I understand why,but I want my coral on my rock when I can. Keeping it reel.

Xenia attaches fairly easily, then it takes over and spreads. I have 1 stalk, which split into two, then 3, and now they are splitting into 6! It's a neat process to watch. I went from one piece to two in less than a week, it just walked its way up a rock.
