hey guys. um getting a 30gallon tank for free with hoods, lights, and filter. so im all excited cuz ive been wanting a bigger tank for a while now. so what should i put in it. i want something different since 30g is a considerable amount of space but before i look i want to see if there are any good rift lake cichlids that i can put in it. i know i could put a colony of shell dwellers in it. but i want to see what some of my other options are.

im open to suggestions on any of the 3 lakes.

Congrats! Thats a great deal!!!

I suggest a tanganikan tank with julies and two different species or one of shell dwellers.

thats what i got goingon in my 55. i might do that is i cant find another seup. ny others?

Hmmm...in a 30...you could have something like a couple of leilupi/julies and a compressiceps or a calvus as a Centrepiece. Jpappy has great ideas for 30G Tang set ups. Hopefully he will be along in this thread momentarily...

A colony of smaller Mbuna like Saulosi or Afra's may work out 1M/3F..

What are the dimensions of the tank? If it long I would say you could keep a breeding pair of Calvus, or shellies or some of the smaller Mbuna. If it is tall I would skip the Calvus and sick with shellies and perhaps Transcritpus. Here's my advice though: setup the shellies first and let them establish themselves. I had problems mixing Julies and Occelatus; the julies would actively hunt the shellies constantly. Everyone was moved to the main tank where 2 Julies wre killed off and I was left with one, and my Ocellatus were picked off one by one.

i think its just the standard 30. im not sure though.

could i do a colony of N. brichardi

Bit tight for brichardi I think - could be wrong - and you'd have heaps of fry and need a plan for those too.

I think no less than a 40 long for a Brichardi colony. That's allowing for a colony to develop in the tank while culling often. If you really want to see a colony I think you'd need a 55 or 75 to allow them enough room to keep multiple spawning pairs. In the 30 you could possibly keep 2 pairs, but you'll be culling fry often. I don't like them as a community Tang much, so I'd be inclined to steer you elsewhere.
